MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 24, 2019 04:12 PM
From: Representative Harry Readshaw
To: All House members
Subject: Dec. 7, 2019 - Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in Pennsylvania

On December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes swooped in unexpectedly to attack the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. That fateful day, more than 2,400 military and civilian lives were lost, and more than 1,000 were injured. The attack was devastating to the U.S. military fleet too, resulting in the destruction of about 20 ships and 300 airplanes. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt requested a declaration of war.
78 years later, we have not forgotten the bravery and patriotic spirit of those who lost their lives or suffered injuries that day. That is why I will be introducing a resolution designating December 7, 2019, as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in Pennsylvania. It is my hope that individuals, educational institutions, patriotic and veterans organizations, and governments commemorate the day when the devastating loss of so many Americans spurred the U.S. to enter World War II. Please join me in ensuring the many sacrifices made on that day continue to hold a place of honor in the hearts of Pennsylvanians.
