MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 5, 2019 04:50 PM
From: Representative Eric R. Nelson
To: All House members
Subject: Domestic Violence Awareness Day Resolution

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to proclaim October 6, 2019 as "Domestic Violence Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

On August 15, 2007, Demi Brae Cuccia was fatally stabbed in her Monroeville home by an ex-boyfriend. Born August 14, 1991, Demi Brae Cuccia was the daughter of Gary Cuccia and Jodi Miceli, who are honoring her memory through the Demi Brae Cuccia Awareness Organization.

As families are the foundation of a safe and healthy community, it is the goal of the House of Representatives that our communities be safe and our youth be protected. At least 40% of young people between 11 and 12 years of age report that their friends have been victims of verbal abuse in relationships; and, among teenagers in dating relationships, 30% have been text-messaged up to 30 times an hour by a partner finding out where they are, what they are doing or with whom they are with. Teen dating violence includes physical, emotional and sexual assault and harassment via texting, electronic mail or instant messaging.

Domestic violence crosses all racial, social, religious, ethnic, geographic and economic boundaries in our Commonwealth and our nation, where 1 in 3 citizens has witnessed a domestic violence incident; and, teen dating violence patterns are similar to adult domestic violence, with widespread effects on individuals, families, schools, businesses and health care systems.

This resolution is being offered in recognition of the impact of teen dating violence on the health and well-being of our communities, requesting the House of Representatives designate October 6, 2019, as "Domestic Violence Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.

Thank you for supporting this resolution.
