Subject: | Disability Designation on Driver’s License or State-Issued Identification Card |
It is no secret that some people with disabilities may have a difficult time communicating with others, particularly in emergency situations. While we have worked with our friends in emergency services to increase training and awareness of such situations, challenges continue to arise. That is why this bill will allow for a discreet designation to be placed on a person’s driver’s license or state issued identification card at their request which would identify them as a person with a disability and therefore hopefully facilitate a more positive and informed interaction. Specifically, this bill would amend §1510 of Title 75 (Vehicles) by adding a section allowing for persons with disabilities to have a discreet identifier symbol on the face of a driver’s license or state-issued identification card. The identifier would not specify the type of disability, but it would provide key insight to the emergency responder as to how to assist and communicate with the individual. Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation. |
