Subject: | Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution which would recognize June as Myasthenia Gravis Awareness month. Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles which are responsible for breathing and moving parts of the body. Myasthenia gravis is caused by an error in the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles. This usually occurs in women under 40 and men over 60, but does not discriminate in race or ethnic groups it impacts. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of people with myasthenia gravis experience at least one myasthenic crisis which requires emergency medical treatment. Myasthenia is considered a rare disease occurring in less than 200,000 people in the country. June is Myasthenia gravis awareness month. My hope is the resolution will inform the general public about the seriousness of myasthenia gravis and help people living with the condition. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
