Subject: | Establishing School Zones at Intermediate Units |
In the ten years that passed from 2007 to 2016, 196 children died in Pennsylvania while walking, 36 of which were children under five years of age. Troubling statistics such as these indicate that we must do more to improve the safety of our roadways. In an effort to further protect students and signal their presence to motorists, I plan to introduce legislation that will allow local authorities to establish school zones at intermediate units – often overlooked education facilities that work with some of our most vulnerable children. Currently, school zones are only permitted at K-12 public, private, and parochial schools, which excludes intermediate units. Establishing school zones at intermediate units will ultimately create a safer environment for our children, their families, and motorists. As such, I ask that you support this important legislation. |
