| Subject: | Legislation Providing for a Severance Tax on Natural Gas Production |
| Seniors need our help. Children in school need our help. For too long we have been talking about helping seniors with their property taxes with nothing to show for it, and for too long we have known that our schools are in dire straits with their funding. It is time to do something about it. I believe that the time to ask the natural gas industry to pay its fair share for using our natural resources to drill for gas and, in turn, increase their profits is well overdue, which is why I plan to introduce legislation that would levy a five percent severance tax on the gross value of natural gas. Revenue from the tax would be split between the State Lottery Fund for use by our seniors, and a restricted account in the General Fund earmarked for education funding. It is time we act on the ideas that have been talked about for years. Please join me in supporting this important legislation. |
