MEMORANDUM

Subject: Lupus Awareness Month

Lupus is sometimes referred to as “the great imitator” because its signs and symptoms share many similarities with a variety of other diseases and conditions. What’s more, even though approximately 1.5 million Americans are living with lupus, 73 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 have either never heard of lupus, or do not know anything about it beyond the name of the condition. Because of these and other factors, it can take up to seven years for an individual to finally receive a diagnosis of lupus, allowing them to get the care and support they need to live a long and healthy life.

It is my hope that greater awareness of lupus, especially the signs, symptoms and risk factors, will lead to higher rates of diagnosis and treatment, and in turn, ensure that individuals with lupus are not suffering in silence. That is why I am reintroducing a resolution designating May as Lupus Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. This is a time for Pennsylvanians to learn a little more about this condition and to show support for our neighbors who are battling every day against symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue and skin rashes.

Please join me in bringing more awareness to this little-known disease that can have a major impact on the lives of those who have it.

**This resolution will be introduced on Monday, May 13, 2019.
