|It is common knowledge that if you want to understand today’s world, you must look to the past. The study of history is a vital component of one’s education as it provides wisdom and insight into civilization’s greatest achievements and failures which helps us make better decisions for the future.
National History Day, an educational program and competition for middle and high school students, was founded in 1974 to promote the study of history through the creation of exhibits, documentaries, performances, websites, and research papers. Studies have shown that students who participate in this program score better on standardized tests in multiple subjects, develop better critical thinking and writing skills, and are better prepared for college and careers.
Thousands of Pennsylvania students participate in National History Day every year and on May 10, 2019, regional winners will gather for the state-level competition. Please join me in congratulating all of the Commonwealth’s participants for their hard work and dedication during the course of this school year by supporting my resolution naming May 10, 2019, as “National History Day in Pennsylvania.” Thank you.
