Subject: | September 2019 Suicide Prevention Month and September 10, 2019 Suicide Prevention Day |
On average there are 129 suicides per day. Most recent numbers from 2017 reveal that 47,173 Americans died by suicide and there were an estimated 1,400,000 suicide attempts. Suicide is a major, preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psychosocial, cultural, and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates. I plan to re-introduce a resolution naming September 2019 “Suicide Prevention Month” and September 10, 2019 as “Suicide Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania. Through this legislation, I believe that we can raise awareness that suicide is preventable, improve education about suicide, spread information about suicide awareness, and decrease stigmatization regarding suicide. Please join me by becoming a cosponsor of this important resolution. |
