MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 26, 2019 04:13 PM
From: Representative Jennifer O'Mara
To: All House members
Subject: Forgotten Cemetery Day in Pennsylvania

Currently in Pennsylvania, there are an untold number of forgotten, abandoned and overrun cemeteries that do not properly represent how any of us would want our loved ones’ final resting place to be treated. These cemeteries, many of which fell into disrepair when the churches that cared for them closed, include historically significant gravestones that date back hundreds of years. Many became overrun with weeds and vegetation, and boroughs and townships lack the necessary funding to properly care for these sites if they even know they exist.

Buried in these forgotten cemeteries are gravesites belonging to veterans of the Revolutionary War and Civil War. Without question, these patriots who died founding and protecting our nation deserve better.

With that in mind, I respectfully ask for you to join me in designating May 4, 2019 as “Forgotten Cemetery Day” in Pennsylvania to raise awareness that these sites exist and deserve our attention.
