MEMORANDUM

Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Resolution that designates the month of May 2019 as “Fibromuscular Dysplasia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

Fibromuscular dysplasia, commonly referred to as FMD, is a rare disease that causes abnormal cell development in the artery wall, leading to narrowing, bulging, or tearing of the artery wall. FMD patients often present the same symptoms that affect the general population, including high blood pressure, headaches, and dizziness. Further, many patients are asymptomatic and FMD is difficult to detect through a physical examination, often causing the disease to develop without much needed treatment or intervention.

While there has been little progress in understanding the disease, experts have found that FMD is far more commonly seen in women than in men, with women comprising 90% of patients diagnosed with FMD. For these reasons and more, I intend to introduce a Resolution designating the month of May 2019 as “Fibromuscular Dysplasia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

It is my hope that my colleagues join me in co-sponsoring this Resolution to foster a greater understanding and public awareness of FMD and to show our support to FMD patients.

To that end, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Harrisburg Office at (717) 705-2567.
