Subject: | Co-Sponsorship of Legislation – Captain Joseph S. Giacobello Memorial Bridge |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to honor Captain Joseph S. Giacobello. This bill will designate a portion of Route 747 over the Juniata River in Mount Union Borough, in Huntingdon County, as the Captain Joseph S. Giacobello Memorial Bridge. Captain Giacobello was drafted into the United States Army on June 17, 1942 and assigned to the infantry. Mr. Giacobello did his basic training at Camp Pickett, Virginia, followed by Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. He went overseas with the 35th Infantry Division, Co. F, 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry Reg., arriving in Normandy July 5, 1944, and in combat July 11, fighting in the hedgerows of St. Lo. Mr. Giacobello was one of the most highly decorated soldiers in central Pennsylvania. As a lifelong resident of Mount Union, he had served gallantly in World War II, earning the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Badge, while fighting in the European Theater. Please join me in sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
