|Subject:||Designating June 2019 as “Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month”|
|Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the nervous system attacks nerve cell receptors that cause skeletal muscles to contract. Individuals with MG live with chronic muscle weakness, with 15-20% of individuals needing a ventilator to assist with their breathing at one point in their life.
An estimated 20 out of every 100,000 people in the United States has MG. However, since muscle weakness is a common symptom of many disorders, the diagnosis of MG is sometimes overlooked. That is why I will be introducing a resolution designating June 2019 as “Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.
By calling attention to this disease, we honor the individuals who suffer from it, the health care practitioners who care for individuals with MG, the researchers aiming to improve the lives of individuals with MG, and the countless advocates committed to finding a cure for MG.
Please join me in supporting this resolution.
