Subject: | School Transportation |
The safety of school students is of paramount concern to everyone involved in providing for an education to Pennsylvania’s children. As state leaders, we must do everything reasonably possible to ensure that children arrive safely to school and are returned safely to their homes. With this in mind, I believe we should help to ensure safer transportation for children by providing that additional children be eligible to receive transportation services from their school. At this time, schools that choose to offer transportation services are required to provide that transportation to elementary school students who live 1.5 or more miles from school, and to secondary students who live two or more miles from school. My legislation would lower those distances – for elementary school students it would be reduced to .5 miles, and for secondary school students it would be reduced to one mile. The more students qualifying for the safety and security of school-provided transportation, the better. Moreover, transportation provided by the school district to more children will ease the burden placed on parents who otherwise must provide such transportation. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to help make safety a priority in the lives of our Commonwealth’s children. |
