Subject: | April 2019 as "Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month" |
Animal cruelty continues to be a problem throughout Pennsylvania and the country. In addition to abuse and neglect, cruelty to animals can include tethering, animal fighting, and hoarding of animals. Animal welfare in the United States changed forever in 1954 when the Humane Society of the United States was founded by animal rights activists with the expressed purpose of advocating for the humane treatment of animals throughout the nation. Today, the Humane Society oversees the direct care of more than 100,000 animals annually. Furthermore, the Humane Society has fought for landmark anti-cruelty laws and maintains efforts to continuously improve the state of animal rights in America. Through the hard work of its volunteers and affiliated organizations, the Humane Society’s mission to stem the neglect, abuse, and mistreatment of animals reaches all corners of the United States. In an effort to support the important work of the Humane Society, this resolution encourages citizens to donate or volunteer at local shelters. Please join me in supporting April 2019 as “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month” in Pennsylvania. |
