Subject: Municipal Police Consolidation Co-sponsorship Memo
Recent tragedies have shone a bright light on the difficulty many municipalities face in recruiting, retaining, training, and equipping the professional police officers who are charged with keeping our communities safe. Too many communities rely on part time officers who must work multiple jobs, have inadequate training, and who often and understandably leave after short employment terms for better paying and full time positions.

This is why I am introducing legislation creating the Municipal Police Enhancement and Consolidation Program to encourage reasonable consolidation, provide funding for training, and ensure police officers have access to the services they need to do the job well.

This legislation charges the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) with oversight of a vital new program that will make grants available to municipal police departments for the following:
  1. Consolidation (25% of funding)
  2. Achieving accreditation standards of the International Association of Chiefs of Police or similar accrediting authority
  3. Training and certification of municipal police officers
  4. Community outreach programs
  5. Enhanced mental health services for municipal police officers.
Please join me in co-sponsoring and supporting this important legislation.
