| Subject: | Resolution Designating February 2019 as “Black History Month” in Pennsylvania |
| The month of February is dedicated as “Black History Month” honoring the triumphs, struggles, accomplishments, artistic and political achievements of African Americans throughout the United States. On September 9, 1915, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (known as the Father of Black History) for the express purpose of chronicling the history and contributions that African Americans have made to our society. His vision would later evolve into the observance of Negro History Week and then ultimately “Black History Month.” The ASALH plays an integral role in highlighting the innumerable accomplishments and achievements of African Americans by continuing to undertake the vitally important task of promoting, researching, preserving, and disseminating information about black life, history and culture to the global community. Additionally, this esteemed organization is responsible for establishing the annual theme for “Black History Month.” The theme for this year is “Black Migrations.” More than 6 million African Americans made the migration from the rural South to cities in the North, Midwest, and West; from the Caribbean to United States cities, as well as to migrant labor farms during the early twentieth century to approximately 1970. The migrations resulted in the emergence of new music forms like ragtime, blues, and jazz and the blossoming of visual and literary arts. "Black History Month" is an opportunity for all Americans to commemorate the various struggles and victories of African Americans throughout the annals of our nation’s history. Therefore, on behalf of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, I thank you in advance for joining us as a sponsor of this resolution designating the month of February 2019 as “Black History Month” in Pennsylvania. |
