MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 4, 2019 10:54 AM
From: Representative Anita Astorino Kulik
To: All House members
Subject: Establishing the Landslide Insurance and Assistance Program

Dozens of Pennsylvania residents, particularly those in the southwestern region of the state, are being evacuated from their homes. Record-setting precipitation has given way to hundreds of landslides, resulting in millions of dollars’ worth of property and infrastructure damage to this region, while also disrupting transportation routes.

With the amount of damage being caused by these catastrophic events throughout Pennsylvania, it is unacceptable that landslide insurance is not available to most homeowners. In hopes of alleviating some worry from those living in a landslide-prone area, I am introducing legislation to establish a Landslide Insurance and Assistance Program within the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. This program will provide reasonable insurance coverage to homeowners, as well as assistance to local governments that seek to mitigate the risk of landslides within their communities.

Please join me in providing necessary protection against landslide damage to Pennsylvanians living in affected areas by co-sponsoring this legislation. Thank you.

Introduced as HB1433
