Subject: Requiring Child Day Care Providers to Install Safety Guards on Doors

Every year, more than 300,000 door-related injuries requiring emergency medical treatment occur. While many of these injuries may be minor, young children suffer the majority of door-related injuries that ultimately require amputation. As such, I am introducing legislation that will require child day care providers to install safety guards on doors.

Children are curious, adventurous, and often unaware of potential dangers around them. Door safety guards installed on the hinge side of the door are designed to prevent children from inserting their finger or hand into the hinge area, and minimize the risk of fracture, laceration, and even amputation. Though quite traumatic and expensive to treat, child door-related injuries can be entirely preventable.

Please join me in protecting our children from serious injury and ensuring their safety while in day care. Thank you for your consideration.
