MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 11, 2019 11:27 AM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Law Enforcement Officer Drug Screening

Drug use by law enforcement officers can lead to many problems. Arrests they make can be later thrown out of court; drug crime evidence tampered with by addicted officers lets guilty parties free; and patrol partners of those using drugs have their safety placed in jeopardy.

We cannot tolerate those we entrust to enforce the law to flout it or be impaired by illegal drugs.

The Law Enforcement Officer Drug Screening Act will provide for the termination of law enforcement officers if they test positive for a controlled substance.

This legislation is very simple. If you are a law enforcement officer, sworn to protect and defend our citizens, and you test positive for drug use, you will be terminated from employment.

We need to send a very clear message that illegal drug use by law enforcement officers will not be tolerated and will be punished.

Last session this was HB 458.

Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation. Thank you.

Introduced as HB637
