MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 9, 2019 04:00 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Suspension of Vehicle Registration for Failure to Respond to Citation

Under current law, violations such as failing to respond to a citation, failing to pay any fine, costs or restitution, or defaulting in the payment of any fine, costs, or restitution can result in license suspension, but there is no existing requirement to ensure that the license holder also surrender their vehicle registration. This creates a loophole which makes it easier for someone with a suspended license to continue to operate a motor vehicle.

My legislation would close this loophole and make it easier for law enforcement to detect an unlicensed driver who is operating a vehicle registered in their name. It would also serve as an additional deterrent to drivers who avoid paying their fines, court costs or restitution.

I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
