MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Banning Lobbyists from Serving as Campaign Consultants

In our state, powerful lobbyists contribute to candidates and work on political campaigns. They then try to sway elected officials – who they helped get into office – on important policies that affect all of Pennsylvania. This means legislators end up wrongly responding to the wants of lobbyists and big money special interests rather than voters.

This practice contributes to a culture of corruption and is why the American people continually rate the honesty and ethical standards of lobbyists the worst of any profession. To combat this, I plan to introduce legislation that would ban lobbyists from serving as campaign consultants, having a financial interest in a campaign-consulting firm, or receiving anything of value for campaign-related services.

Please help me restore the trust of Pennsylvanians by supporting this necessary piece of legislation. Doing so will also decrease the influence of lobbyists who currently outnumber legislators five to one and donate millions of dollars to campaigns.

Introduced as HB1421
