Subject:	Strengthening Consumer Protections in Contracts

Pennsylvanians enter into contracts every day. Whether it is a contract for cell phones, cable television, home improvement or another contract, full disclosure is necessary. Too many times, people find themselves on the wrong side of a misleading contract. In order to help protect Pennsylvania consumers, I will soon introduce legislation strengthening Pennsylvania’s Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law. My bill, based off of New Jersey law, creates a deceptive practice when a contract uses confusing or vague language to create provisions that can become void, unenforceable or inapplicable. Anyone who enters into a contract or receives a notice needs to be able to have full disclosure and understanding of what may become void or unenforceable, along with what triggers these actions. Violators would be liable for a civil penalty of at least $100, actual damages or both recoverable by consumers. I ask for your support and to join me in co-sponsoring this legislation so we can better protect Pennsylvania families from receiving deceptive contracts and notices.
