Subject: Resolution - “Fireworks and Pet Health Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating July 1, 2019, as “Fireworks and Pet Health Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

Pets are beloved family members and provide numerous mental health benefits to their owners. Unfortunately, the mental health needs of pets are often overlooked. One of the many conditions that affects animals is anxiety. However, symptoms of fear, anxiety, or stress in animals may be difficult to detect or may be confused with other behavioral problems.

A leading cause of anxiety in pets is loud noises, such as those produced by fireworks. According to one recent study, approximately 39 percent of dogs suffer from noise sensitivity. With the recent expansion of consumer fireworks sales in Pennsylvania and the approach of the Independence Day holiday, pet owners should be on the lookout for symptoms of anxiety in their animals.

Please join me in sponsoring this resolution in order to raise awareness about the effects that loud noises, such as fireworks, can have on the health of our pets.
