Subject: | Parents to Attend Cyber Harassment Education Programs With Their Child |
In the near future I will introduce legislation that would require a parent or legal guardian to attend any mandated training required of a juvenile convicted of cyber harassment of a child. Act 26 of 2015 added the definition of cyber harassment of a child to our crimes code. Over half of teens are victims of cyber harassment, and about the same number have engaged in cyber harassing themselves. Under the new law, a child found in violation may or may not be ordered to participate in an educational program. My bill would require they participate in such education and that their parent or guardian attend and complete the same training with them. It is important that parents attend the classes so that they can reinforce what is taught once the child gets home. Studies show that when parents are involved in their children’s lives and proactive in dealing with bullying, its frequency goes down. Please support and cosign this important legislation. Thank you. |
