Subject: | Juneteenth National Freedon Day |
Previously, we passed House Resolution 322 recognizing "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" for 2012. In both the 2013-2014 legislative session and the 2015-2016 legislative session a bill was introduced by the House and was considered once in the Senate to name Juneteenth as an annual observance on June 19th. In the near future, I plan to re-introduce this legislation that will establish "Juneteenth National Freedom Day" as an annual observance for the Commonwealth. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today, this commemorates African-American freedom by emphasizing education and achievement. It is recognized annually in approximately 37 states nationwide. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
