Subject: | Transparency in School Personnel Separations and Settlements |
In the near future I will introduce legislation that would require transparency in all school personnel separations and settlements. No school district would be able to enter into any agreement that would prohibit public disclosure of the terms of separation or settlement regarding school personnel, unless ordered by a court. Since school personnel are paid with public dollars, taxpayers have every right to know the terms of separation including cash, benefits or any other consideration. Too often these settlements or separations are agreed to only under the condition of being sealed off to the public. This should not be. Just as elected officials should be held accountable and remain transparent with their finances and other benefits, so should school districts. Both need to be good stewards of the public funds. Making deals closed off from public view creates doubt as to what is being done. Please support and cosign my legislation to require that school personnel actions be made in the light of day and not in secret. Thank you. |
