MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 18, 2018 02:00 PM
From: Representative Michael N. Corr
To: All House members
Subject: Running for Two Offices Simultaneously

It seems that during each election cycle a number of candidates run for two offices simultaneously. I believe a candidate for office should commit to the public how he or she intends to serve and not be able to “play the odds” in an effort to secure at least one position. Furthermore, it is inappropriate for a person who simultaneously wins two elections to impose on the public the cost of a special election when one of the elected positions is necessarily declined.

The need for the public to fill government positions through an open election process is essential for our system of government. Current law, however, puts the desires of an individual ahead of the needs of the public. Therefore, in the near future I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit a person from simultaneously running for more than one office in the same election. The prohibition would apply across all levels of government (local, state, and federal).

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
