Subject: | Legislation Creating a Liaison for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the Department of Education |
In the near future we plan on introducing legislation to create a Liaison for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the Department of Education. Pennsylvania is home to two of the oldest HBCUs in the nation, Cheyney University and Lincoln University. HBCUs are institutions established prior to 1964 with a principal mission to provide higher education to African American communities. HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to further their education and develop their skills and talents. The Liaison will be responsible for coordinating with Commonwealth departments and agencies, the private sector, educational associations and philanthropic organizations to: strengthen and improve the participation of HBCUs in state programs, fostering public-private partnerships to promote research and programmatic excellence at each HBCU, and improve availability of information on HBCUs. This legislation is based off bipartisan legislation that recently became law in Tennessee. Please join us in sponsoring this legislation. |
