MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 9, 2018 02:46 PM
From: Representative Jason Ortitay
To: All House members
Subject: Volunteer Fire Department Construction Grant

Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation to redirect a portion of the annual deposits in the Public Transportation Trust Fund to fund a grant program for volunteer fire departments.

The grant program would be used to provide funding for the next 10 years for physical structures and items needed to create living quarters for fire fighters to live on premises to answer fire calls. This is necessary to allow more volunteer fire departments to provide 24/7 service.

This program would be funded by reducing the amount deposited annually in the Public Transportation Trust Fund, which provides dedicated funding for public transportation in the Commonwealth.

Under current law, 4.4% of the sales and use tax collected is deposited in the Public Transportation Trust Fund. Under this legislation, the amount deposited in that fund would be reduced to 4.3%. The Volunteer Fire Company Physical Improvement Fund would be established as a special fund in the State Treasury and would receive deposits of 0.1% of the sales and use tax collected.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation.
