Subject: | “Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month” |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the month of May 2018, as “Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Month” and May 31, 2018, as “Necrotizing Fasciitis Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Necrotizing Fasciitis is a serious infection that may affect any age group. It may occur in people with diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic vascular disease, malignancy and hypertension. In rare occasions, it may occur in healthy individuals following a minor injury to the skin caused by a simple fall or cut. As some of you may be aware, this disease hit us close to home in the summer of 2016 when one of our own, Jill Vecchio, Senior Legal Counsel to the Republican Caucus, contracted this illness after picking strawberries with her sons. Jill has shared her story with me and will share her story with anyone interested because raising awareness of this illness is one of the keys in early diagnosis which can lead to an increased survival rate among those who contract necrotizing fasciitis. While progress has been made in diagnosing the symptoms of this disease, there is still much to be learned. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution aimed at raising public awareness of this debilitating-life threatening disease, as well as honoring both the survivors and those who have lost their battle to this disease. |
