Subject: | Special Election Reform |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to reform how special elections are conducted to fill vacancies in the offices of U.S. Senator, Representative in Congress and Representative or Senator in the General Assembly. Specifically, my legislation will permit candidates of political parties to be placed on the ballot for a special election by filing a form and paying a fee, rather than the current committee nomination process. Under my legislation, candidates for these vacancies will gain access to the special election ballot by filing a special petition with the Secretary of the Commonwealth that will not require signatures, but will require a fee that is equal to $1 for every signature that a nomination petition would require during a normal primary election. It is important to note this new requirement would not apply to vacancies in local government positions. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that will both increase candidate ballot access and provide voters with more options on the special election ballot. |
