Subject: | Compensation of Legislators Who Resign Legislation |
As legislators, we are compensated at the beginning of the month for work that we perform during the ensuing month. We receive this compensation with the expectation that we will serve the people of our districts for the entire month. Situations have and will arise in which legislators resign from office and are unable to fulfill this expectation. I believe that, in certain situations, legislators who resign should reimburse the Commonwealth for the taxpayer-funded compensation they received at the beginning of a month. That is why I intend to introduce a proposal that will require any legislator who resigns from office prior to the 15th day of any month to reimburse the State Treasury in an amount equal to the compensation for that month. As legislators we must strive to lead by example and be accountable to the public. Please consider cosponsoring this legislation, which is a small step in the right direction. |
