Subject: | Resolution - Financial Aid for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution that would urge the United States Congress and President Donald Trump to extend the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) application deadline to January 1, 2018, for financial aid and relief to the residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that were affected by Hurricane Maria. For many residents, limited electricity and cell phone service combined with limited access to emergency and medical services, clean water, and food supplies have created a crippling scenario in which many residents are simply trying to survive. Due to the lack of electricity and cell phone service, many residents have been unable to apply for financial aid and other disaster relief. The current deadline for residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to apply for financial aid and relief from FEMA is November 30, 2017. It would be prudent to provide the residents of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with further opportunities to seek the aid they so desperately need. Granting an aid application extension would help further ensure that all residents affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria are provided with the opportunity they need and deserve as they attempt to rebuild their communities and lives. I hope you will join me in supporting this important measure. |
