MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 28, 2017 11:28 AM
From: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating “Kwanzaa Week” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating December 26, 2017, through January 1, 2018, as “Kwanzaa Week” in Pennsylvania.

Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday which was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Professor and Chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Long Beach, to commemorate the past in pursuit of its lessons and to rejoice the goodness of life, family, community and culture. In addition, this celebration introduces and reinforces the seven values of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

In closing, this time represents an opportunity for citizens of the Commonwealth to commit to the highest ideals and to bring forth the best in African cultural practices. Therefore, I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution designating “Kwanzaa Week” in Pennsylvania.

Thank you.
