MEMORANDUM

Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Resolution recognizing the week of October 22 through October 28, 2017 as “National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a Resolution recognizing the week of October 22 through October 28, 2017 as “National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” in Pennsylvania.

As you know, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week emphasizes awareness of the sources of this pervasive neurotoxin, the steps to reduce or prevent harmful blood lead levels, and improve health outcomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends early childhood lead screening to identify asymptomatic exposure as well as targeted screening of at-risk children according to known risk patterns. Here at home, the Department of Health administers area childhood lead poisoning program offices. These offices track children and adults with elevated blood lead levels and provides comprehensive prevention and control services in high-risk areas.

With human exposure to lead an epidemic, and with the long term health concerns this exposure causes, it is incumbent on us as leaders of this great Commonwealth to raise awareness and get children and adults tested as early, and, as often as possible.

Therefore, it is with these reasons in mind and more that I am offering this Resolution. If you have any questions, please contact my Research Analyst -- Takesha Latham at 717-787-3480 or via email at tlatham@pahouse.net.
