|Subject:||Applying the $5 Fee for Local Use to Each Year of Vehicle Registration|
|In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending Title 75 (Vehicles) to clarify that the $5 fee for local use on vehicle registrations applies to each year of registration.
Under Act 89 of 2013, counties may, by ordinance, impose a $5 fee for each nonexempt vehicle registered in the county. This $5 fee is collected by PennDOT and then distributed to the county to be used for local transportation purposes.
Currently, this $5 fee is collected per vehicle registration, not per year. As a result, owners who opt to register their vehicles on a biennial basis only pay $5. My legislation will clarify that the $5 fee is collected for each year of registration so that biennial vehicle registrations pay the appropriate $10 fee.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation to continue funding our transportation system.
