MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 8, 2017 10:14 AM
From: Representative Becky Corbin
To: All House members
Subject: Hate Crimes Against Disabled

Recent abhorrent attacks on individuals with mental and physical disabilities have highlighted a critical gap in Pennsylvania’s Criminal Code.

Currently, Pennsylvania’s Criminal Code only provides for hate crime charges dealing with incidents involving acts committed against an individual based on race, color, religion or national origin.

Recent attacks committed against disabled individuals represent some of the most repugnant acts and should be punished accordingly.

In the near future, I will introduce legislation that adds “mental or physical disability” to list of items that prosecutors can consider when contemplating hate crime charges.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as HB1528
