MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 2, 2017 09:53 AM
From: Representative Stan Saylor
To: All House members
Subject: School Board and Charter Trustee Training

Please join me by cosponsoring legislation that I plan to introduce in the near future regarding school board and charter school trustee member training.

The legislation that will require each newly elected, appointed, or current school board and charter school trustee member to undergo a training program regarding the skills and knowledge pertaining to running a school district. The training program will be made available to the school board members by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), in consultation with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) and the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials (PASBO) and to the charter school trustees by PDE in consultation with statewide organizations representing charter schools.

Newly elected or appointed school board or charter school trustee member must complete a training program that will consist of eight hours of instruction, and each school board or charter school trustee member who is reelected or reappointed must complete, within one year, an advanced training program that will consist of four hours of instruction.

Any school board or charter school trustee member who is in office on the effective date of this legislation, must complete the training program required by June 30, 2019.

The purpose of this legislation is to ensure that our local school board members have the necessary knowledge to carry out the vital responsibilities associated with running our local public schools.

Furthermore, the legislation will also require training for School Reform Commission members.

Please join me in sponsoring this legislation.
