Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 11, 2017 03:54 PM
From: Representative Kathy L. Rapp
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Directing the Joint State Government Commission to Establish an Advisory Committee to Conduct a Study on Alternative Education Programs

I will be introducing, in the near future, a resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission to establish an advisory committee to examine alternative education and its impact across the Commonwealth. The advisory committee will be comprised of representatives of the Department of Education, educational organizations, public organizations involved in alternative education issues, and other organizations selected by the Joint State Government Commission.

Specifically, my resolution directs the advisory committee to study the following:
  • The number of disabled students who attend alternative education programs;
  • Statues, best practices, and legislative initiatives in other states concerning students and disabled students in alternative education programs;
  • The number of students who drop out of alternative education programs;
  • The number of students who graduate from alternative education programs;
  • Measurement of educational outcomes for children in foster care;
  • The number of students who are expelled from alternative education programs;
  • The average period of time students with disabilities attend alternative education programs; and
  • The method of instruction, effectiveness, and typical class schedule of a student in alternative education programs.
The advisory committee will issue a report of its findings and recommendations to the House of Representatives no later than one year after the date of adoption of the resolution.

I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this resolution.
