House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 5, 2017 09:19 AM
From: Representative Eddie Day Pashinski
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution asking Congress to strengthen and protect federal food and nutrition programs

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution asking Congress to strengthen and protect federal food and nutrition programs on behalf of the most vulnerable citizens of Pennsylvania, especially the over 500,000 food insecure children. I will ask Congress to oppose efforts to block grant or cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, the first line of defense against hunger, helping over 14 percent of Pennsylvanians buy groceries from Pennsylvania retailers every month and lifting over 13 percent of households out of poverty. I will ask Congress to protect and strengthen the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) through increased funding for CSFP caseload, TEFAP food purchases and TEFAP storage and distributions funds.

More than 1.8 Pennsylvanians struggle with hunger and food insecurity and rely on the federal food and nutrition programs as the firm foundation for our Commonwealth’s anti-hunger efforts. Generous support from Pennsylvanians to the charitable food networks represented by Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, in addition to the Commonwealth funding of the State Food Purchase Program and the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System provide additional support for hungry Pennsylvanians including children and low-income seniors, however, this funding is still not enough to meet the need without these important federal programs.

No one should be hungry in Pennsylvania. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution.
