MEMORANDUM

Subject: Ultraviolet Safety Month

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing July 2017 as "Ultraviolet Safety Month" in Pennsylvania.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with more skin cancers diagnosed each year than all other cancers combined. The number of skin cancer cases has been increasing over the past few decades, mostly from too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation. Sunlight serves as the main source of UV rays, although it can also come from man-made sources such as tanning beds, sun lamps and welding torches.

Avoiding sunlight completely is not possible or healthy, but there are several steps to safeguard skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation from the sun. These include wearing protective clothing, avoiding sunburns and staying out of the sun during peak burning hours when UV light is the strongest, and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen and re-applying throughout the day.

Please consider joining me in recognizing July 2017 as "Ultraviolet Safety Month" in Pennsylvania in order to raise awareness of the dangers of UV rays and to point out the most effective ways to avoid these harmful rays.
