Subject: Cosponsorship of Resolution - Sheltered Workshops

We are sponsoring a resolution recognizing the value sheltered workshops have in the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Sheltered workshops are facility-based day programs that provide employment to individuals with disabilities based on an industrial model of development. This model values individual work ethic, skills development, and productivity, and provides meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities. These facilities provide specialized and dignified employment services for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to learn job skills and earn wages, interact with peers, and gain a sense of accomplishment.

Pennsylvania’s 511 sheltered workshops have been advocates for individuals with disabilities and act as a catalyst for development of other needed services and supports. The workshops enable individuals with disabilities to access a variety of vocational and personal options and are an integral part of the local communities in which they serve. Furthermore, sheltered workshop providers believe in the self-worth of every person and their right to full participation in their local community as they choose.

We ask that you join us in sponsoring this resolution to recognize the value of Pennsylvania’s sheltered workshops and acknowledging the providers who enable individuals with disabilities to live full and productive lives in our communities.
