MEMORANDUM

Subject: Recognizing April 2017 as “Alcohol Awareness Month”

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing April 2017 as “Alcohol Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Alcohol use by Pennsylvania’s youth is extremely dangerous, not only to themselves but to society. Underage drinking is directly associated with traffic accidents and fatalities, violence, suicide, academic failure, alcohol poisoning and other destructive behaviors. Adolescence is a time of heightened risk-taking and our youth may not fully comprehend the consequences of drinking alcohol.

It is with this in mind that we need to raise awareness about alcohol abuse and take action to prevent it, both at home and in the community. We have a responsibility to provide minors with alternative opportunities and education to ensure no youth turns to alcohol for recreation and escape.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to stand together with community organizations, business leaders, government agencies and our partners in the alcohol industry to raise awareness about the effects alcohol can have on our society when abused.
