|Subject:||Recognizing May 20-26, 2017 as "National Safe Boating Week" in Pennsylvania|
|In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution (similar to House Resolution 903 of last session) recognizing the week of May 20-26, 2017, as "National Safe Boating Week" in Pennsylvania. This week will be set aside to provide boating groups with the opportunity to promote boating safety and the importance of wearing life jackets.
In Pennsylvania, we are fortunate to have 85,000 miles of rivers and streams. In my district alone, Lake Erie has over 63 miles of shoreline and 735 square miles of waters within the Commonwealth’s boundaries. Every year, Pennsylvanians take to the water on a variety of watercraft.
Commonwealth law requires anyone born after January 1, 1982, to obtain a boating safety certificate to operate a personal watercraft or powerboat with a motor greater than 25 horsepower. In addition, Coast Guard-approved life jackets are required while aboard a watercraft.
Safe boating practices are everyone's responsibility. Therefore, I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
