| Subject: | Protection of Minors from Conversion Therapy Act |
| In the near future, we plan to re-introduce legislation – House Bill 935, Printer’s Number 1132 of the 2015/16 Legislative Session – that prohibits mental health providers from engaging in conversion therapy with a patient under 18 years of age. We believe it is time that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania joined California, Illinois, Oregon, New Jersey, Vermont, and Washington, D.C. in protecting our youth from conversion therapy. These laws were signed by both Republican and Democratic governors. The practice of conversion therapy is opposed by the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychoanalytic Association, American Psychological Association, National Association of Social Workers, Pan American Health Organization, and World Psychiatric Association. We will be introducing “The Protection of Minors from Conversion Therapy Act.” As its name indicates, our bill will prohibit mental health providers from engaging in the incredibly harmful and widely discredited practice of conversion therapy with patients under 18 years of age.
