MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 17, 2017 01:37 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Requiring Tax Collectors to Send Tax Notices to Mortgage Servicers upon Request

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will require a Tax Collector to send a copy of a property owner’s tax notice directly to a mortgage servicer upon request from the mortgage servicer. Many of our constituents may live in a municipality in which the elected Tax Collector already sends a copy of the tax notice to the constituent’s mortgage servicer as a courtesy. This is not the case throughout the Commonwealth however. Currently, Tax Collectors are only required to send the tax notice directly to the property owner, leaving the property owner responsible for faxing or mailing a copy of their tax notice to their mortgage servicer.

My legislation would bring at least a small level of uniformity to a system that can often be filled with handshake agreements and misunderstandings that can potentially leave our constituents in a situation where property tax bills may inadvertently be left unpaid. I hope you join me in supporting this legislation and providing an increased level of stability and uniformity to our local tax collection process.
