MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 19, 2016 12:13 PM
From: Representative Will Tallman
To: All House members
Subject: Zeke's Law

I plan to re-introduce legislation (formerly HB1157) to assist canine law enforcement officers injured in the line of duty.
My proposal will amend Act 193 of 1935, known as the Enforcement Officers Disability Benefits Law (Heart and Lung Act); to include police animals designated as canine law enforcement officers.

Police animals provide a very valuable service to law enforcement across this Commonwealth. Canine officers are used for more than just apprehending criminals. These law enforcement officers work in drug enforcement, search and rescue, bomb detection, and other specialized police task forces. When injured in the line of duty, these special animals should receive the healthcare they deserve, especially when they are relied upon to protect and serve.

One canine law enforcement officer named Zeke was shot by a perpetrator while in the line of duty. Zeke was airlifted to a hospital and went through extensive surgery before the questions of transporting a police dog in an ambulance and who would pay for it were asked. It is situations such as this for which this legislation will address.

Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this piece of legislation.
