|Subject:||Reflectors on Self-Propelled Wheelchairs and Electrical Mobility Devices|
|In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes to require that self-propelled wheelchairs and electrical mobility devices be equipped with reflector requirement.
Specifically, my proposal requires that every self-propelled wheelchair and electrical mobility device designed for the exclusive use of a person with a mobility-related disability and operated between sunset and sunrise be equipped with a red reflector facing to the rear and a reflector on the front and each side, all of which must be visible from at least 500 feet. Additionally, my legislation prohibits any person from selling a self-propelled wheelchair or electric mobility device, whether new or used, unless equipped with the proper reflectors.
Other states such as Oregon and Rhode Island have taken the necessary steps to significantly increase the visibility and safety of individuals who utilize these devices. I hope you will join me in creating such safeguards in our Commonwealth by offering your co-sponsorship to this legislation.
