Subject: | Resolution Honoring the 230th Anniversary of the U.S. Constitution |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the 230th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. September 2017 will mark 230 years since the Constitutional Convention of 1787 convened in Philadelphia at Independence Hall. The 55 delegates who assembled that spring were prepared to revise the existing Articles of Confederation. Through intense debate, they agreed to draft an entirely new document – the Constitution – and vastly reimagine America’s system of government. The constitutional framers negotiated throughout the summer of 1787, taking into account the wants and needs of the various states, to create the three branches of government and bicameral legislature used today. The vision and foresight of the framers, many of whom were farmers, merchants, bankers, lawyers and former soldiers, produced a governing document that has survived with relatively few changes for more than two centuries. Please join me in recognizing the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. |
